What’s Up There on Mount Lee?
The Hollywood Sign was originally constructed in 1923 by the Crescent Sign Company. This company was responsible for fabricating the massive letters and assembling them on the slopes of Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California. Under the direction of Thomas Fisk Goff, a young artist and set designer, the Crescent Sign Company brought Goff's vision to life, creating the iconic landmark that would become synonymous with the entertainment industry and the city of Hollywood itself. The Hollywood Sign remains a testament to the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the Crescent Sign Company and its team of builders, who transformed a simple promotional stunt into one of the most recognizable symbols in the world.
The letters of the Hollywood Sign were originally constructed using a combination of wood and sheet metal. Each letter stood approximately 45 feet tall and was mounted on a framework of steel pipes and telephone poles anchored into the rocky terrain of Mount Lee. The wooden panels formed the structure of each letter, providing the framework onto which the sheet metal was affixed. The sheet metal served as the outer covering of the letters, providing a smooth surface for painting and enhancing the visibility of the sign against the backdrop of the Hollywood Hills. This combination of wood and sheet metal was chosen for its durability, ease of construction, and ability to withstand the elements, ensuring that the Hollywood Sign would remain a lasting symbol of the entertainment industry for generations to come.
